Research Notes

1890 Census

Damaged and Destroyed

The 1890 federal census was heavily damaged by fire in 1921. Most remaining damaged portions were later destroyed, leaving very few surviving population schedules.

Public Release

72-Year Rule

Federal census population schedules are released to the public after 72 years. The 1950 census has been released, and the 1960 census is expected to become publicly available in 2032.
